My dear friend Gina was kind enough to share an intimate part of her life with me that not many people know about. Her life is deeply affected by obsessive-compulsive disorder, which I’ve come to understand almost like a religion. I studied it to gain insight into her daily rituals, which she performs without fail and never takes a break from. No one else witnesses these rituals but her. She guided me into a world I was unfamiliar with, and I am grateful for her openness. In this project, I aimed to capture the essence of her as a human being, along with her rituals, as raw and unfiltered as possible. Being her friend definitely made our collaboration easier, and I learned a lot from her throughout the process of understanding her obsessive-compulsive disorder. I spent days with her exploring her home, interviewing her, examining her belongings, and hearing stories from her childhood up to the present. I feel as if I am almost like a sibling who grew up alongside her. This connection helped us create an intimate space together for the Ceremony of Compulsion, fostering a unique portal between the viewer and her experiences.Gina and my professor opened my eyes to the usage of photography as a tool to enhance my graphic design work. Now I am able to produce not just words but images as well.
Thank you.
